Not only will they secure two poles together, but they separate poles so that they will not rub on or over each other. They can also be used to support the top of an inner tent by securing to crossing tent poles when attached via a short ribbon/webbing strap, or indeed attaching the tent inner or flysheet to any point where two poles cross.
